Isn’t this couch potato adorable? I think we can all relate to being the couch potato, especially if we have a crochet project in our lap.
The couch is easy to make, and the pieces and assembly are easy! Don’t worry, this pattern isn’t complicated and is definitely fun. I think these would sell amazingly at craft fairs, especially if you made couches in different colors!
Back Piece:
In Blue
Round 1: Ch 22 (Pic 1). Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook, Sc 2 times in that same stitch (Pic 2). Sc in the next 19 st (Pic 3). Sc 3 times in the next st. Now we meet the end of the chain. Turn to the other end of the chain. Working on that other side (Pic 4), Sc in the next 19 st (Pic 5, stitch count: 44)
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Round 2: Inc in the next 3 st, Sc in the next 19 st, Inc in the next 3 st, Working on the other side Sc in the next 19 st (50) Round 3-16: *Sc* all around (50)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Place the piece onto a piece of cardboard (Pic 1).
1.
Trace around, then cut the traced part out (Pic 2-3). Put this into the couch. Lightly stuff one side of the couch – the part you stuff will be the front side of the couch (Pic 4). The unstuffed part will be the back side of the couch. Once done, using the tail end of yarn, sew the stitches together to close the piece.
2. 3. 4.
Base of Couch:
In Blue
Row 1: Ch 11. Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook, Sc in the next 9 st (10) Row 2-25: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in the next 24 st (10) Row 26: Now sc around the entire crochet piece (we are working on the edge of the rows). This will smooth out the edges, and set us up to work in rounds in the next round. When you crochet around the edges, the stitch count often varies and is hard to recommend the perfect stitch count. Just crochet around the piece and stop once you meet the first stitch you made in Row 26. Round 27: Now we’re working in rounds. Working in the BLO (Back Loop Only), *Sc* all around. Don’t forget to use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch you make in this round. Round 28-29: Working in BOTH loops, *Sc* all around Round 30: Sc all around, but make 1 decrease each time you reach a corner. This means you will make a total of 4 decreases since there are 4 corners. These decreases will help keep the couch a rectangle shape. Round 31-32: *Sc* all around
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Bottom of Couch:
In Blue
Row 1: Ch 11. Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook, Sc in the next 9 st (10) Row 2-25: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in the next 10 st (10) Row 26: Now sc around the entire crochet piece (we are working on the edge of the rows). This will smooth out the edges.
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Place the piece onto a piece of cardboard (Pic 1). Trace around (Pic 2), then cut the traced part out. Repeat this again so you have a total of two cardboard pieces. Set these aside for now.
1. 2.
Place the bottom piece to the base of the couch. Make sure the stitches align (Pic 3). Sew the pieces together (Pic 4), only sew 3 out of the 4 sides together. Stop when you have one last side to sew together. Now insert the cardboard piece into the bottom area of the couch. Then stuff the couch. Then add the second piece of cardboard into the top of the base of the couch (this is the part where the potato sits). After that, stuff a little more to make sure the couch is firm. Then finish sewing the rest of the couch pieces together. After this, weave in ends and cut any excess yarn.
3. 4.
Assembly:
Place the stuffed side of the couch’s back to the base of the couch. The last round of the couch’s back should touch the base of the couch (Pic 1-3). Pin it in place to where you like it.
1. 2. 3. 4.
Unpin half of the back so we can place hot glue there. Place a strip of hot glue on the back of the couch, then hold the back firmly to the base for about 15 seconds to secure. Repeat this to the other half of the back of the couch.
Seats: (Make 2)
In Blue
Round 1: Ch 10. Sc 3 times in the 2nd Ch from the hook. Sc in the next 7 st. Sc 3 times in the next Ch. Now we meet the end of the Ch. Working on the OTHER side of the chain, where we haven’t made any stitches yet, Sc in the next 7 st (20) Round 2-11: Sc all around (20)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. I didn’t stuff the eats because it looked too puffy, but you can if you want to. Now align the stitches of the seat and sew the remaining stitches together. Weave in ends and cut any excess yarn. Don’t secure the seats to the couch yet.
Arms: (Make 2)
In Blue
Round 1: 6 Sc into a Magic Ring (6) Round 2: *Inc* all around (12) Round 3: *Inc, Sc in the next 5 st* all around (14) Round 4: Working in the BLO, *Sc* all around (14) Round 5-14: *Sc* all around (14)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff the arms firmly now.
Place the couch cushions onto the couch now. Do not secure them. Where the seats are placed will help us determine where the arms of the couch need to go. Now place the arms onto the couch, securing with pins.
1. 2.
Take note of where the arms of the couch meet the base of the couch. The area where the two pieces connect is where we will place our hot glue. It’s a fairly small area, so be careful to not use too much hot glue on the arm of the couch, or else the excess hot glue will spill out onto the sides of the couch. Using hot glue, place two strips of hot glue onto the arm of the couch. Then, place the arm back onto the couch and hold in place for about 15 seconds to secure. Repeat this process to the other couch arm.
After this, the end of the couch arm needs to be sewn to the back of the couch (Pic 3). Using the tail end of yarn from the arm, sew going from the base of the couch to the arm of the couch (Pic 4-6). Do this until there is no more opening on the arm. Note that you won’t need to sew the entire arm to the couch, since some of the opening is covered when we hot glued the arm to the couch.
3. 4. 5. 6.
Potato:
Start in brown
Round 1: 6 Sc into a Magic Ring (6) Round 2: *Inc* all around (12) Round 3: *Inc, Sc in the next st* all around (18) Round 4-6: *Sc* all around (18)
Now we will mark where to place the safety eyes. Add a different colored stitch marker into the 8th and 10th stitch in Round 4. Later we will replace these stitch markers with safety eyes. Round 7: Sc in the next 5 st. Working in the FLO, Inc in the next 6 st. Working in BOTH loops, Sc 7 st (24)
Add the safety eyes into the marked areas now. Round 8-14: *Sc* all around (24) Round 15: *Dec, Sc in the next 2 st* all around (18) Round 16: *Dec, Sc in the next st* all around (12)
Stuff firmly here. Round 17: *Dec* all around (6)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the remaining stitches closed and weave in ends. Cut any excess yarn.
Potato Limbs: (Make 4)
In Brown
Row 1: Ch 7. Hdc in the 2nd Ch from the hook. Hdc in the next 5 ch (6)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Pin the arms and legs on as shown and sew or hot glue on. Once done, weave in ends and cut any excess yarn.
You can sew or hot glue the potato to the couch now if you want. The directions to make his smile is on the next page.
Smile:
In Black Embroidery Thread
Insert needle into the middle area of the toy as shown (Pic 1) and pull needle out at the left of the toy’s eye as shown (Pic 1). Reinsert needle into the middle of the toy (Pic 2) and pull needle out next to the toy’s right eye (Pic 2). Reinsert needle into the middle of the toy as shown (Pic 3) and pull needle out nearby. Tie ends of thread into firm knots and bring knots inside the toy to hide. Cut any excess yarn.

Done!
If you made this couch potato, I would LOVE to see! You can show me by posting a picture in the comments underneath this post.
Working on this now. I think there is a typo in the instructions for the base of the couch. . Row 2-25, I think it should say SC in all ten stitches for the next 24 rows…not stitches.
