This adorable pair of sardines are cuddling in their can, which makes this a cute gift for someone you love (maybe a good Valentine’s gift!) You can get creative and make the fish in different colors, like one blue for a boy and one pink for a girl! If you want, you could even glue on sequins to make the fish more scaly and shiny. Let’s get started!
Body:
Start in aqua blue for head

Round 1: 6 Sc into a Magic Ring (6)
Round 2: *Inc* all around (12)
Round 3: *Sc* all around (12)
Round 4: *Inc, Sc in the next st* all around (18)
Round 5-6: *Sc* all around (18)
Now we will mark where to place the safety eyes. Add a different colored stitch marker into the 5th and 14th stitch in Round 18. Later we will replace these markers with safety eyes.
Round 7: *Sc* all around (18)
Round 8: *Inc, Sc in the next 5 st* all around (21)
Round 9: *Sc* all around (21)
Round 10: *Inc, Sc in the next 6 st* all around (24)
Add the eyes into the marked areas now.
Round 11: *Sc* all around (24)
Round 12: Change to light blue. Working in the BLO (Back Loop Only), *Sc* all around (24)
Round 13-26: *Sc* all around (24)
Round 27: *Dec, Sc in the next 2 st* all around (18)
Round 28-29: *Sc* all around (18)
Stuff firmly now. Continue stuffing after each round.
Round 30: *Dec, Sc in the next st* all around (12)
Round 31: We have 12 stitches. Align the stitches together and working through BOTH stitches at the same time, Sc in the next 6 st. We’ve now crocheted the stitches together and have 6 stitches (6)
Round 32: Now we make the tail. Ch 1 and turn. Make 3 Dc in each of the next 2 st. SlSt in the next 2 st. Make 3 Dc in each of the next 2 st.

Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in ends and cut any excess yarn now.
Fins: (Make 2)
In light blue

Row 1: Ch 5. Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook, Sc in the next st, Hdc in the next st, Dc in the next st.
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Pin the arms onto each sardine as shown — the arms on one sardine should be lower, and the arms on the other sardine should be higher. This is so it looks like they’re hugging each other.
Tin Can:
In light grey

Row 1: Ch 23. Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook, Sc in the next 21 st (22)
Row 2-32: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in the next 22 st (22)
Row 33: Now we will make the edges smoother. To do this, we work around the edges of the crochet piece all around. Simply make a Sc all around the can. Since working in the edges is hard to get completely correct stitch count wise, we don’t use a stitch count for this. Just make single crochets around the entirety of the crochet piece and stop once you meet the first edge single crochet piece you made. Once you’ve worked completely around the piece, continue with the next steps:
We just finished forming the base of the can. Now we will form the height/sides of the can.
Round 34: Working in the BLO (Back Loop Only), *Sc* all around
Round 35: Working in BOTH loops, Sc all around, making a decrease stitch in each corner (this means you’ll make a total of 4 decreases in this round since the can has 4 corners).
Round 36-39: *Sc* all around
Now we will make the edges of the can. To do this, we will make a “crab stitch”. A crab stitch is simply making a single crochet, but in the previous stitch to the RIGHT of your hook instead of working to the LEFT of your hook.
Round 40: Make a crab stitch in each stitch all around the can. Below is a tutorial for a crab stitch. Once done, finish off. There will be a gap between the first and last crab stitch you made. Simply sew them together, then weave in ends and cut any excess yarn.
Crab Stitch: Insert your hook into the next stitch to your right (Pic 1-3). Yarn over, and pull the yarn through (Pic 4-6). You will have two loops on your hook (Pic 6). Yarn over and pull through both loops (Pic 7-9). You have completed 1 crab stitch! See, it’s simply making 1 single crochet into the next stitch to your right! Repeat making 1 crab stitch all around until you’ve completed all around.

Tin Can Top:
In light grey

Row 1: Ch 22. Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook. Sc in the next 20 st (21)
Row 2-16: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in the next 21 st (21)
Row 17-26: Change to dark grey. Ch 1 and turn, Sc in the next 21 st (21)
Row 27: Now we will make the edges of the can top smooth by working around the edges of the crochet piece. Simply make Single Crochets around the entire edges of the crochet piece, changing to dark grey when you’re working in a dark grey area, and changing to light grey when you’re in a light grey area. Once you’ve finished crocheting around the entire piece, finish off the light grey yarn leaving a LONG tail for sewing. Finish off the dark grey yarn and weave in the dark grey yarn’s ends.
Assembly:
In light grey
Place the can top onto the can, making sure the can and can top align with one another. Using the tail end of yarn from the can top, sew the two pieces together. Sew going under the crab stitch, do not sew above the crab stitch. Once done sewing the two pieces together, weave in ends and cut any excess yarn. You can leave the dark grey area as-is, or you can fold it and hot glue it in place.

Smile:
In black embroidery thread
Insert needle with thread into the middle mouth area of the toy, and pull the needle out next to the toy’s left eye as shown (Pic 1). Reinsert needle into the middle mouth area (Pic 2) and pull needle out next to the right eye (Pic 2). Reinsert needle into the middle mouth area and pull needle out a few stitches over. Tie the ends of thread into firm knots and bring them inside the toy to hide. This will secure the smile. Done!
