This leaf gnome is such a cool decoration to display on a wall or even on your door! This pattern requires you to make various types of stitches to form the points on the leafs, such as half, double, triple, and double triple crochets. We will also make a picot stitch. In this pattern I include written tutorials for how to make a half, double, triple, and double triple crochet stitch, and how to make a picot stitch.
Stitches:
Half Double Crochet (Hdc)
Yarn over once and insert your hook into the next stitch. Yarn over again and pull up a loop. You will have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all three loop at the same time. Done!
Double Crochet (Dc)
Yarn over once and insert your hook into the next stitch. Yarn over again and pull up a loop. You will have 3 loops on your hook. *Yarn over and pull through two loops* 2 times. Done!
Triple Crochet (Trc)
A triple crochet is similar to a double crochet, except instead of yarning over once and inserting your hook into the next stitch, you will yarn over twice, then insert your hook into the next stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 4 loops on your hook. *Yarn over and pull through two loops.* 3 times. Done!
Double Triple Crochet (Dtrc)
A double triple crochet is similar to a triple crochet, except instead of yarning over twice and inserting your hook into the next stitch, you will yarn over three times, then insert your hook into the next stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 4 loops on your hook. *Yarn over and pull through two loops.* 4 times. Done!
Picot Stitch (Pc st)
Ch 2. Make a single crochet into the 2nd Ch from the hook. Done! Continue with making your next stitch as described in the pattern.
Leafs:

We make a total of:
7 red leafs (6 for the beard and 1 for the hat)
7 orange leafs
6 yellow leafs
Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 2, then make 10 Dc into the magic ring. SlSt to the top of the Ch 2 to complete the circle. The Ch 2 does not count as a stitch. (10)
Round 2: Ch 2. Dc 2 times in each of the next 10 Dc. SlSt to the top of the Ch 2 to complete the circle. (20)
In the next round we make the points of the leaf.
Round 3:
•Hdc in the next st, Dc in the next st.
•Dc in the next st, Pc st, Dc into that same st, Hdc into the same st
•Sc in the next st
•Hdc in the next st
•Dc in the next st, Trc 2 times into that same st, Pc st
•Trc in the next st, Dc into that same st, Hdc into that same st
•Sc in the next st
•Hdc in the next st, Dc into that same st, Trc into that same st

•Hdc in the next st
•Sc in the next st
•Hdc in the next st, Dc into that same st, Pc st, Dc into that same st
•Dc in the next st, Hdc into that same st
•SlSt in the next 2 st, Ch 4. Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook, Sc in the next 2 ch. SlSt into the same st at the base of the leaf stem.
Finish off. Weave in ends.
Beard Assembly:

There are a total of 7 rows that make the beard.
Row 1: Yellow, red, and orange
Row 2: Orange, yellow, red, red
Row 3: Red, orange yellow, orange
Row 4: Yellow, red, orange
Row 5: Red, orange, yellow
Row 6: Orange, red
Row 7: Yellow
You will have 1 red leaf left over. This leaf goes on the hat later.
How to layer the leafs:
You can layer them any way you want. However, this is how I layered my leafs:
When laying down the leafs, alternate which ones will be on top of each other.
Most of the leafs on Row 1 will cover Row 2.
All leafs on Row 3 cover Row 2.
All of the leafs on Row 4 cover Row 3.
All of the leafs on Row 5 cover Row 4.
All of the leafs on Row 6 cover Row 5.
The leaf on Row 7 is on top of one leaf on Row 6 and covered by the other leaf on Row 6.
Gluing the leafs together:
On the areas where the leafs connect, apply hot glue on the bottom of the leaf (Pic 1), and gently lay down the leaf in place to secure the glue (Pic 2). Be careful when holding down the leaf with glue, it can get hot. I used an end of a pencil to hold the leaf down in place so I wouldn’t get any hot glue on my fingers.
1.
2.
Repeat this process of gluing the pieces that connect together.

Its so pretty! Thankyou for this pattern, it makes a beautiful decoration!
Also made a strand on back of hat for hanging.
I had so much fun making this! As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to make one for my mom. I didn’t use tweed for the hat, but it still turned out super cute!

Thank you so much for the lovely pattern.
I know it says 7 red leaves but its actually 8!! 7 in beard, 1 on hat!
8 red, 7 orange, 6 yellow.
Enjoyed this pattern! Made this or my mom!
Really loved making this pattern! It’s so great! Just wanted to point out, you need 7 red leaves for the beard, and 1 for the hat. 🙂
Really fun pattern thank you
Hi! Can you help please? I’ve been crocheting for a few decades and I want so badly to make this pattern but I’m struggling sending a pic of the leaf. I’ve done it several times trying to figure out my error. Is it obvious to you because I don’t feel there should be Four stitches left. I’m not sure where I’m going wrong for round three how many stitches are there total? I would very much appreciate your help.
You are missing the last bump on your leaf.
Hi Pamela, I don’t know if you ever got a reply to your leaf question, but yes you make the last leaf “petal” in 2 stiches, and slip stitch in the other 2 that are left, and build the stem in the second slip stitch. I hope this helps (if you still needed it!)
Hi Pamela,
It looks to me like you’re missing the fourth point of the leaf, the opposite to your second point. There should be five points altogether. I printed the instructions and drew a line after each pointy bit (sc in next st). You are missing the bit after the group containing the Dtrc – row 12 onwards.
I hope this helps.
I really enjoyed making this. Such a lovely item. Thank you for the pattern.
Love it! My gnome is ready for fall on the front door. Thanks for the pattern!
Thanks for this cute pattern! My gnome is on the door and ready for fall ☺️
This was fun to make! The leaves were a bit of a pain to get in the right pattern, but eventually I set aside my perfectionism and just went with the flow! Awesome pattern.
Loved the pattern – made 3 for my siblings. I added more colors to the leaves and used a pumpkin leaf for the hat. Where the pattern called for glueing things together I chose to sew everything together. Very easy pattern to follow and very fun to make.

This is number 3 that I made.

Hello! Someone has stolen your pattern. It’s listed under Happy Hookie and they’re selling it for $15 on sale for $8.99. https://happyhookie.com/products/crochet-pattern-gnome-leaves?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwMVdANjbGNrAxVx8WV4dG4DYWVtAjExAAEe5ywWvM9xGdKBhm6HxQx8f2-wPa2QurgtG3J-jYFDk_vpdX3Al1DmmyEX_iY_aem_EXf5bfbihh3cFpvOkZkf2g
It was a rough start but finished!
Made this, and then couldn’t stop myself I needed more!!! The Christmas and winter ones share the same beard, it’s tied on so I just switch the hat when necessary! So cute, thank you so much!
Lovely pattern! So pleased with it. I used DK yarn because it’s what I had. I also used 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0 mm hooks for the leaves to give it more of a tapered effect.
Hopefully the photo uploads this time
I love this pattern! It’s so easy! Thank you! I’m going to make the Christmas one too ☺️
Thank you so much for the pattern!! I had fun making this! Will be trying a Christmas one!
Loved this pattern!! Thank you
Can someone explain the hat instructions to me in more detail. The way it reads is confusing to me and doesn’t make sense. Take round 6 for example, include half double crochet into next stitch all round (9). This would either make the round 7 stitches round OR 12 stiches, depending on how you read it. It doesn’t make it 9 stitches. Is this hat circular for flat? With the magic ring I assume round but no where does it say to slip stitch into the beginning to make it round. Thanks for any and all help!
Le chapeau est circulaire et il faut faire une augmentation de demi-bride et une demi-bride trois fois ce qui fait neuf mailles a la fin du tour .
Hi, does the paid PDF give clear step by step instructions or is it a copy of this page just without the ads? I am new to this and struggling for some reason with the directions. I am confused on the pc stitch for some reason 🙁 i understand the stitch but I guess what I am unclear on is that you dont say into the next stitch. I may be confusing myself lol
Judy,
The picot is made and then continue the pattern with the same or next stitch in the pattern. The picot will be the top of one stitch and then you go to the next stitch. I hope that helps. I don’t know about the pdf.
Example:
Dc in the next st, Pc st, Dc into that same st, Hdc into the same st
—>Dc, ch2, sc in second ch from hook, Dc in same space as first Dc, Hdc in same st as Dc stitches. This means 2 DCs and the HDC in the same stitch.
Thank you Wendy
Hi, I have done my leaves and have started the hat. My issue with this is the increasing on the hat at beginning, I keep ending up with too many stitches and I have counted from beginning of magic ring and around I get past the 2-5 rows fine but when I start increasing I am getting two extra stitches at the end….. HELP!!! I DONT KNOW WHERE IM GOING WRONG!!!😭😭😭😭
Hey Christina, did you ever get a response? I am struggling with the hat too. I bought the pattern thinking it would give better instructions but no. I have emailed her two times as well and not received any answer. I am stuck on row 8. I understand you inc ( two HDC in one stitch but then I get confused on then HDC in the next two stitches all around. Do you then Increase again in the next stitch or just HDC till the end? When I did the increase, the HDC in the next two stitches then * repeat from the beginning I ended up with way too many stitches. Where are you stuck? I am so frustrated as I am committed to this project but cant get help
Julie,
See my answer to Christina. I hope that clears things up!
Hi Julie no I never got a reply on help. So I did it the best way I know… if you start from beginning and go in round as normal slip stitching at the end of each round and chaining 2 and go that way it works out so much better.
Throughout the pattern, it is similar to a regular beanie or hat.
The increase rows will start with 2 Hdc for the increase. Then you do the amount specified as single Hdc stitches. Repeat around.
Round 6:
2 Hdc, Hdc, 2Hdc, Hdc, 2 Hdc, Hdc = 9 Hdc
Use a stitch marker to make it easier.
I hope that helps.
For the rest, you do 2 Hdc, Hdc, Hdc, 2Hdc, Hdc, Hdc, for example.
That is the (inc, Hdc in next 2, repeat) row. The number grows by 1 in between the increases.
A little late on the help now I asked days ago for help but I got no reply so I just did it in a way I could get the way I could get the right amount of stitches. I just finished the pattern and the nose and getting ready to put it all together. This pattern needs more explanation then what there is given. For ex- whether it’s Done in continued round or the regular round where you slst at the end. I tried continued round but I wasn’t getting the right amount or stitches so I did it where I slip stitched at the end of each round like you would in a normal hat.
I love this pattern. So easy. Ill be making Santa next!
I love this pattern. So easy. I’ll be making Santa next!
Thank you so much for your pattern. I had a lot of fun making it, and even my teenboys like it! I used all the leaves for the beard, but made a small acorn for the top of the hat, to use for hanging. Love from Belgium.
Hi can anyone help. I am trying to do the hat but I am confused about row 2-5. She does not mention sl st to close the rows or chaining up. I am also not sure about the increase on how to do it. Does anyone know if the written PDF has more detailed instructions? Thanks
So easy. Picked a fall colored mix instead of solids.
Here is how it came out
Loved the variety of colors instead of solids.
How is everyone hanging their gnome? I’ve looked everywhere in the pattern to see if I missed something saying what to attach to the hat, but didn’t see anything.
I just made a chain and tied it to the back of the hat making a ring to hang the gnome.
How is everyone hanging their gnome? I’ve looked everywhere in the pattern to see if I missed something saying what to attach to the hat, but didn’t see anything. All I need to do is make the nose and start assembling the hat, beard, and nose,
Thank you!
Live this pattern, thank you so much! This is my version. I sewed the leaves together to make it more durable.
Very easy and fun pattern, I absolutely love him! Thank you for sharing 😊
Meet Gnorman 😆 Finished 10/16/25
Thank you for the pattern. I had fin making it !!
Hi all. Thank you very much for this free pattern.
I’m looking for a bit of advice, can anyone give me any ideas how I can hang this on my wall without the weight stretching the hat, please? Thank you so much in advance 🙂
