This mini elephant is a great pattern because it involves NO sewing! That means he’s super quick to make. I love that you can make this elephant in any color, whether you make a pink elephant or brown elephant, it will look great in any color. You can also make the elephant bigger by using a plush or blanket yarn. This pattern also includes a step-by-step photo tutorial for making a popcorn stitch. Let’s get started!

How to do a popcorn stitch:

Repeat *Yarn over (Pic 1) and insert your hook into the next stitch (Pic 2). Yarn over and pull up a loop (Pic 3-4). Yarn over and pull through two loops on your hook (Pic 5-6).* a total of 4 times.
1.2.3.4.5.6.

Now you will have 5 loops on your hook (Pic 7). Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops at the same time (Pic 8-9). Done! You’ve just made a popcorn stitch.

Body:

In Grey Yarn

We start by making the trunk of the elephant, which will lead into the head and body. The entire elephant is made in one continuous piece.

Round 1: 6 Sc into a Magic Ring (6)
Round 2: In the BLO, *Sc* all around (6)
Round 3-6: Working in BOTH loops, *Sc* all around (6)
Round 7: *Inc* all around (12)
Now we will mark where to place the safety eyes. Add a different colored stitch marker into the 4th and 9th stitch. Later we will replace these stitch markers with safety eyes.
Round 8: In BOTH loops, *Inc in the next st, Sc in the next st* all around (18)
Round 9: *Inc in the next st, Sc in the next 2 st* all around (24)
Add the safety eyes into the marked areas now.

In the next round we will make the ears.
Round 10: Sc in the next 8 st.
Working in the FLO, SlSt in the next st, Dc 4 times in that same st, SlSt into that same st.
Sc in the next 9 st.
Working in the FLO, SlSt in the next st, Dc 4 times in that same st, SlSt into that same st.
Sc in the next 5 st
(Stitch count: Do not count the ear stitches, count the back loop we left behind the ear, as this is the stitch we will crochet into in the next round. This means we have 24 stitches in this round.)

Round 11: Sc in the next 8 st. Sc in the next st behind the ear. Sc in the next 9 st. Sc in the next st behind the ear. Sc in the next 4 st. Now we will make one of the feet. Working in the FLO, make a popcorn stitch in the next stitch.

Tip: Even though we make 4 Hdc to make a popcorn stitch for the arm; when we yarn over and pull through all the loops, this forms 1 total stitch. When we meet this popcorn stitch in the next round, you will simply crochet into that 1 entire stitch it formed, just like you would crochet over a regular single crochet!

Round 12: Sc in the next 4 st. Now we will make the other foot. Make a popcorn stitch in the next stitch. Sc in the next 18 st. Sc in the next stitch (we are making a Sc over the first arm). (24)
Round 13: Sc in the next 4 st. Sc in the next stitch (we are making a Sc over the second arm), Sc in the next 19 st (24)
Scroll down now for the “nose assembly” instructions. This will help you stuff and make the trunk pose-able. After that, continue crocheting on Round 14.
Round 14-18: *Sc* all around (24)
Round 19: Sc in the next st. Popcorn st in the next st. Sc in the next 4 st. Popcorn st in the next st. Sc in the next 17 st (24)
Round 20: Repeat *Dec, Sc in the next 2 st* all around (18)
Stuff the body now. Continue stuffing after each round.
Round 21: Repeat *Dec, Sc in the next st* all around (12)
Round 22: *Dec* 5 times. Ch 6. Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook, Sc in the next 4 ch. Working back on the elephant, Dec 1 time.
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the remaining stitches closed and weave in ends.

Trunk Assembly:

In Grey Yarn

Take a pipe cleaner that’s about 4″ long (Pic 1). Fold the pipe cleaner in half (Pic 2), then twist the two legs of the pipe cleaner (Pic 3). This will make the pipe cleaner stronger and more pose-able. Now bend the pointy end of the pipe cleaner up (Pic 4-5). This will help the pointy ends not poke out of the trunk.

1.2.3.4.5.

Take small amounts of stuffing (Pic 6) and roll the stuffing in your hand to form a roll of stuffing (Pic 7-9). Using the pipe cleaner as a stick, stuff the stuffing into the trunk. Repeat this two more times, or until the trunk is stuffed. Now place the pipe cleaner inside the trunk.
