Supplies:
• Yarn 6/Super Bulky AKA Blanket Weight Yarn in…
Black
•4 weight yarn in green for eyes and grey for nose
•6mm Crochet Hook
•Tapestry needle to weave in ends
•Scissors
•Stuffing
•Hot glue (optional)
•18mm safety eyes

This black cat is super easy and fun to make, and best of all, it’s make all in one piece so you don’t need to sew on the ears, arms, or tail! This really speeds up how quickly you can make this cat 🙂 This pattern also includes a tutorial on how to make the popcorn stitch for the feet and arms. Let’s get started!

How to do a popcorn stitch:

Repeat *Yarn over (Pic 1) and insert your hook into the next stitch (Pic 2). Yarn over and pull up a loop (Pic 3-4). Yarn over and pull through two loops on your hook (Pic 5-6).* a total of 6 times.

Now you will have 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops at the same time (Pic 8-9). Done! You’ve just made a popcorn stitch.

Body:

Start in black

Round 1: 8 Sc into a Magic Ring (8)
Round 2: *Inc* all around (16)
Round 3: *Inc, Sc in the next st* all around (24)
Now we will mark where to place the safety eyes. Add a different colored stitch marker into the 6th and 16th stitch. Later we will replace these stitch markers with safety eyes.
Round 4: *Inc, Sc in the next 2 st* all around (30)
Round 5-6: *Sc* all around (30)

In the next round we will make the ears

Round 7: Sc in the next 12 st.
Working in the FLO, Sc in the next st, Dc into that same st. Ch 1.
Working in the next FLO, Dc in the next st, Sc into that same st.
Now working in both loops, Sc in the next 3 st
Working in the FLO, Sc in the next st, Dc into that same st. Ch 1.
Working in the next FLO, Dc in the next st, Sc into that same st.
Working in both loops, Sc in the next 13 st (38)

Round 8: Sc in the next 12 st. Bend the ear towards you to expose the stitches behind the ear (pic 2). Working BEHIND the ear, Sc in the next 2 st (pic 3-4). Working in both loops on the head, Sc in the next 3 st (pic 5). Now we meet the ear. Bend the ear towards you and Sc in the next 2 st behind the ear (pic 6). Working in both loops on the head, Sc in the next 11 st (pic 7-8). (Stitch count: 30)

Add the eyes into the marked areas now. If the eyes don’t align with the ears (this can happen due to different tensions, yarn sizes, etc.), then shift the eyes to the next stitch until they match up nicely.

Round 9-10: *Sc* all around (30)
In the next round we will make the arms. After making the arms, ensure they line up with the eyes and ears. If they don’t, shift the arms over by making more or less single crochets before you make the arms.
Round 11: Sc in the next 2 st. Make a popcorn st in the next stitch. Sc in the next 26 st. Make a popcorn st in the next st. Sc in the next 2 st (32)
Round 12-16: *Sc* all around (32)
In the next round we will make the legs. Ensure they align with the arms. If they don’t, shift the arms over by making more or less single crochets before you make the arms.
Round 17: Sc in the next 4 st. Make a popcorn st in the next st. Sc in the next 26 st. Make a popcorn st in the next st. (32)

Round 18: *Sc* all around (32)
In the next round we will make the opening for the tail. Ensure the opening aligns centered between the ears. If the opening doesn’t, shift the opening over by making more or less single crochets before making the opening.
Round 19: Sc in the next 16 st. Now we will make the opening for the tail. Ch 3. Skip the next 3 st on the body and Sc in the next st. Sc in the next 12 st (32)
Round 20: Sc all around. (32) Note: When you meet the Ch 3, you will sc 1 stitch in each ch.
Round 21: *Dec, Sc in the next 2 st* (24)
Round 22: *Dec, Sc in the next st* all around (16)
Stuff the cat firmly now. Continue stuffing after each round.
Round 23: *Dec* all around (8)
Round 24: *Dec* 2 times then finish off (6)
Sew the 6 stitches together. I find it easier to sew these stitches together by weaving the yarn through the stitches with my crochet hook.

Tail:

In Black

Round 1: The tail will be made up of 6 stitches. This is because in Round 19, we skipped 3 stitches and chained 3 stitches, leaving an opening of 6 stitches total for the tail. Attach your hook into any of the stitches (pic 2) and yarn over (pic 3). Now, sc all around. (6)

You can follow the rounds below, or if you prefer, you can crochet around until you’ve counted a total of 42 stitches, which is what Round 1-7 will give you! This is easier if you don’t want to move a stitch marker after every round.
Round 2-7: *Sc* all around (pic 4) (Stitch count: 6)
Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing the hole of the tail closed. Stuff the tail firmly, then sew the tail closed and weave in ends. Cut any excess yarn.

Eye Whites:

In Green or any color

Take a long piece of green yarn and place it into a needle. Insert needle into the toy and pull needle out at the top right side of the right eye (pic 1). Reinsert needle into the lower side of the eye as shown (pic 2). Pull needle out at the lower left eye as shown (pic 3). Reinsert needle into the top area of the left eye as shown (pic 4). Pull needle out at the whisker area and make two whiskers on each side of the toy’s face, making sure the top whisker is longer than the bottom whisker (pic 5-6).

Nose:

In grey or any color

Make a line between the toy’s eyes a total of 2-3 times (pic 1). Pull needle out at the center, below the nose (pic 2). Reinsert needle a few stitches down (pic 3). Once done, weave in ends and cut excess yarn.

  3. So cute! My only problem is I can’t figure out how to get to the 30 stitch count in round 4 from the 24 stitch count in round 3. Am I misreading the pattern or not understanding? I would love to finish the cat I started!

    1. Hi, I think there’s a little mistake in that round: you have to increase and then sc in the next three stitches. That way you get 30 stitches. 😉

  8. I love this little cat but can’t get past round 8 on the body. it’s hard to see the stitches in the photos. Seems no matter what I have more than 11 stitches after the second ear? Any ideas what I’m doing wrong?
