This possum is made all in one continuous piece with no sewing, which means this pattern works up very quickly. I made most of these in under 45 minutes! The time may take longer if you’re not as experienced with popcorn stitches. Either way, the pattern is super fun, easy, and definitely works up quick!
I put tutorials for “how to make a popcorn stitch” and “double crocheting into a previous round” at the very beginning of this pattern so the written pattern is easier to follow if you already know how to do these things. This is helpful if you make a lot of possums and no longer need these tutorials in between a written pattern!
How to Make a Popcorn Stitch:
Used for Arms and Legs
Change to black yarn. Working in the FLO (Front Loop Only), Slst in the next st, then Dc 3 times in that same FLO st (Pic 1).
1.
Change to grey. Remove your hook from the current stitch. Insert your hook into first DC made (Pic 2), then also insert your hook into the current working loop (Pic 3).
2. 3.
Yarn over (in grey. Pic 4) and pull through both loops at the same time. You’ve just made 1 popcorn stitch which forms the arms/legs! (Pic 5)
4. 5.
How to Dc into a Previous Round:
In Grey
Change to grey. Yarn over (Pic 2), then insert your hook into the previous round’s next stitch as shown (Pic 2-3).
1. 2. 3.
Yarn over and pull up a loop (Pic 4-6).
4. 5. 6.
Yarn over and pull through two loops (Pic 7-8),
7. 8.
then yarn over and pull through two loops again (Pic 9-10). You’ve just made a double crochet in the previous round!
9. 10.
Now make a double crochet in the previous round’s next stitch (Pic 11-12). This means you’ve made a total of 2 double crochets.
11. 12.

In BOTH loops, Sc in the next st, Inc in the next st, Sc in the next 3 st (Stitch count: The black ear stitches only count as 1 stitch since we will crochet behind the ears in the next round. With this in mind, the stitch count is 30 for this round.)

Remember to not count the last st, we will skip it.) Round 19: *Dec, Sc in the next 2 st* all around (18)
Stuff the head and body firmly now. You don’t have to over stuff the toy. Round 20: *Dec, Sc in the next st* all around (12) Round 21: *Dec* all around (6)
Stuff the body firmly again now. Round 22: Change to pink. Working in the FLO, *Sc* all around (6) Round 23-27: *Sc* all around (6)
