These snakes are super easy to make, and they look even cooler when you make a bunch with different colors! This snake will surely be loved by any young boy in your life, they’re fun to play with 🙂 This pattern uses bulky plush yarn. I used Premier Parfait yarn for these snakes. If you use Bernat Blanket yarn, the snakes will come out even larger. If you use regular yarn, the snakes will come out much smaller.

Head/Body:

In Any Color

Round 1: Make a Magic Ring. Ch 2, then make 8 Dc into the magic ring (Stitch count: 9. The Ch 2 counts as a stitch)
Round 2: Working in the BLO, *Sc* all around (9)
Round 3-4: In BOTH loops, *Sc* alla round (9)
Now we will mark where to place the safety eyes. Add a different colored stitch marker into the 4th and 7th stitch in Round 4. Later we will replace these stitch markers with safety eyes.
Round 5: Working in the FLO, *Inc, Sc in the next 2 st* all around (12)
Round 6: In BOTH loops, *Inc, Sc in the next 3 st* all around (15)
Round 7: Repeat *Inc, Sc in the next 4 st* all around (18)
Round 8-9: *Sc* all around (18)
Add the eyes into the marked areas now.
Round 10: Sc in the next 9 st. Repeat *Dec, Sc in the next st* 3 times (15)
Round 11: Sc in the next 9 st. *Dec* 3 times (12)
Round 12: Working in the FLO, *Sc* all around (12)
In the next rounds we will form the long body of the snake. Since there are a lot of rounds we make for the body, you might have an easier time measuring the snake as you go along instead of counting rounds. Measure starting at the neck until your body is 17.5″ long. You can make the snake even longer if you want! After that, continue to the “tail” section, which will show you how to crochet the rounds to make the tapered tail.
Body:
Round 13-73: *Sc* all around (12)
Tail:
Round 74: *Dec, Sc in the next 2 st* all around (9)
Round 75-76: *Sc* all around (9)
Round 77: *Dec, Sc in the next st* all around (6)
Round 78-79: *Sc* all around (6)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the remaining stitches closed and weave in ends. Cut any excess yarn. Done!

Striped Snake Color:

1. Make Round 1-14 in the normal main color of your snake.
2. Then, work 1 round in the dark color, 1 round in the light color, and 1 round in the dark color.
3. Then, Sc in the main color for next 5 rounds.
4. Repeat steps 2-3 all the way until the end of the body at Round 73. Once on the tail (Round 74), work only in the main color.

If you made a snake, I would LOVE to see! You can show me by posting a picture in the comments underneath this post 🙂

  1. Is the striped snake worked in continuous rounds or connected rounds moving up?

  2. Oh my gosh! These are adorable! I’m totally going to make some!

  3. Thankyou for this pattern. I made mine for Halloween out of Chainette yarn as I had some on hand so it’s quite stiff 🤣 I also added a rattle in the end of the tail – he’s great!

  4. I’m going to make so many of these 🐍❤
