This Santa snowflake gnome is such a cool decoration to display on a wall or even on your door! At first the snowflake may seem tedious to make. However, after you’ve made a few of them, the pattern becomes very easy and you can memorize the pattern! This pattern requires you to make clusters of double crochets for the snowflakes and picot stitches for the pointy parts of the snowflake.

•Picot Stitch
Ch 2. Make a single crochet into the 2nd Ch from the hook. Done! Continue with making your next stitch as described in the pattern.

Snowflakes:

We make a total of:
14 white snowflakes (13 for the beard and 1 for the hat)
1 green snowflake
1 red snowflake

• Make all beard snowflakes using a 5mm hook.
• Make the snowflake for the hat using a 4mm hook. This will
make the snowflake smaller and fit onto the hat better.

Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 2, then repeat *2 Dc into the magic ring, Ch 1* 6 times.
SlSt to the top of the Ch 2 we made, this will complete the circle (Pic 1). The Ch 2 does not count as a stitch. (Stitch count: 18. 12 Dc and 6 Ch)

1.

Round 2: SlSt to the next ch 1 space (Pic 2). Ch 2. Dc 2 times in that space, Ch 2, Dc 3 times in that same space. Ch 1 (Pic 3).
Repeat *Dc 3 times in the next Ch 1 space, Ch 2, Dc 3 times in that same space. Ch 1* 5 times. SlSt to the next Dc to complete this round (Pic 4).

2.3.4.

Round 3: Repeat *SlSt to the next Ch 2 space (Pic 5), Pc st, SlSt back into the same space, Ch 2, Dc into same space, Pc st, Dc 2 into same space, SlSt into same space, Pc st, SlSt into same space (Pic 6). SlSt to the next Ch space (Pic 7). Pc St, SlSt into same space (Pic 8).* all around.

5.6.7.8.9.

Finish off once done, leaving a tail of yarn. You can weave in all ends now if you plan to hot glue the snowflakes together, otherwise, leave the tail of yarn to sew the beard together later.

TIP:

Your snowflake will initially look bunched up. To easily fix this, simply place the snowflake on a flat surface like a table and press your palm on top of the snowflake while pulling at each corner to straighten the snowflake out. As you do this, you can also pull the tail of yarn going to the magic ring to tighten the center more. After this, your snowflake should settle to be much flatter.

Beard Assembly:

In White

There are a total of 6 rows that make the beard.
Row 1: 3 white
Row 2: 3 white
Row 3: 1 white, 1 green, 1 white
Row 4: 1 red, 2 white
Row 5: 2 white
Row 6: 1 white
You will have 1 white snowflake left over. This snowflake goes on the hat later.

How to layer the snowflakes:
You can layer them any way you want. However, this is how I layered mine:

When laying down the snowflakes, alternate which ones will be on top of each other.
Row 2: All snowflakes on Row 2 will cover Row 1.
Row 3: The two left snowflakes on Row 3 will cover Row 2. The snowflake on the right on Row 3 is covered by Row 2’s right snowflake.
Row 4: Row 4’s red snowflake covers Row 3’s white snowflake. Row 3’s green snowflake covers Row 4’s red and white snowflakes.
Row 5: Row 4’s red snowflake covers Row 5’s white snowflake. The right snowflake on Row 5 covers Row 4.
Row 6: Row 6’s snowflake goes under Row 5.

Gluing the snowflakes together:
On the areas where the snowflakes connect, apply hot glue on the bottom of the snowflake (Pic 1), and gently lay down the snowflake in place to secure the glue (Pic 2). Be careful when holding down the snowflake with glue, it can get hot. I used an end of a pencil to hold the snowflake down in place so I wouldn’t get any hot glue on my fingers.

1.2.

Repeat this process of gluing the pieces that connect together.

Round 40-42: In BOTH loops, *Hdc* all around (54)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in ends.

Snowflake for hat:

Place the snowflake on the side of the hat so the top and bottom points are on the side of the hat, and the two left points are on the front of the hat, while the two right points are on the back of the hat. Hot glue on by applying glue to one point at a time. Embroider 2 small snowflakes to the top left of the big snowflake.

Gluing together hat and beard:

Place Row 1 of the beard into the hat. Only the tips of the snowflakes need to be inside the hat. Then, hot glue the areas where the snowflakes meets the hat together.

Round 9: *Dec, Sc in the next st* all around (12)
Finish off.
Place the nose under the hat as shown. I hot glued the nose in place but you can sew it in place if you prefer. If you choose to hot glue, I applied glue in the center of the bottom side of the nose, as well as the edges of the bottom of the nose. Then I placed it where shown.

Pom Pom for Hat:

In White

First, cut a 12″ piece of white yarn and set aside for later. Now, take white yarn and wrap it around for 3 fingers 100 times (Pic 1, 2, & 3). Now take the yarn off your fingers (Pic 4). Wrap the 12″ piece of yarn around the yarn a few times (Pic 5-6). Do this tightly to secure. Now, cut the loops of yarn as shown (Pic 7-10). Be sure to cut all the longer pieces of yarn off to get a puffy ball. Finally, hot glue the pom pom to the front tip of the hat as sown (Pic 12).

  3. I love this pattern! Made it in no time flat! My snowflakes got rearranged because I had to move them to glue them. All in all even with the rearranging I think he came out pretty good! I put a bell on his hat opposed to the pom pom beause when I made the pom pom it came out wonky. He is proudly hanging on my front door.
