How to make a crocodile stitch

Crocodile stitches are worked into a previous round made of double crochet clusters (Pic 1).

The crocodile stitch is made up of 5 double crochets into one post of the cluster, then a picot stitch to make the point of the leaf, then another 5 double crochets into the other post of the cluster.

To double crochet into the post, insert your hook behind the post as shown (Pic 2-3). Yarn over, pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull through two loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops on your hook. You’ve just completed a double crochet (Pic 4). We make a total of 5 double crochets per post (Pic 5). Make a picot stitch (Pic 6). Work 5 double crochets in the next post (Pic 7-9).

How to make a picot stitch:

A picot stitch is very easy and helps our leaf look pointier. To make a picot, simply chain 2, then Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook. Done!

0-3 Months (3.5″/9cm long. 2″/5cm width) with 4.00mm hook

0-6 Months (4″/10.5cm long. 2.2″/5.5cm width) with 4.5mm hook

0-3 months and 3-6 months use this same pattern but different hook sizes.

We start by making a chain and working around the entire chain to form a round.

Round 1: Ch 10. Sc 3 times in the 2nd ch from the hook. Sc in the next 7 st. Now we meet the last ch. Sc 6 times in the next st. Working on the OTHER side of the where we haven’t made any stitches yet, Sc in the next 7 st (23)

Round 2: Inc in each of the next 3 st. Sc in the next 3 st. Hdc in the next 2 st. Dc in the next 2 st. 2 Dc in each of the next 6 st. Working on the other side, Dc in the next 2 st, Hdc in the next 2 st, Sc in the next 3 st (32)

Crocodile Stitching:

All sizes use the same pattern for the crocodile stitching. Follow Rounds 12-16 for every size of shoe. In the next round we will make double crochet clusters. Later our crocodile stitches will be made into these clusters.

Round 12: In orange, Ch 4 (Pic 1). Dc into same space where ch is (Pic 2-3). Ch 1. Skip the next 2 st, then Dc 2 times in the next st (Pic 4-5).
Repeat *Ch 2, skip the next 2 st, Dc 2 times in the next st* 8 times.
Ch 1, then skip the next 2 st. Working on the first 4 chains we made in this round, count to the 3rd ch made and make a SlSt on that 3rd ch (Pic 7-8). Then, make a slst in between those two Dc’s (Pic 9). (Stitch count: 10 clusters total)

Turn shoe inside out and tie loose ends into small knots and cut any excess yarn.

Wattle:

In Red

Use the same size hook as you were using for your boot.
Row 1: Ch 6. Sc 4 times in the 2nd Ch from the hook. SlSt into that same st. SlSt in the next 4 st.
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Pin the wattle on as shown and sew or hot glue on. Once done, weave in ends and cut any excess yarn.

Beak:

In Orange

Use the same size hook as you were using for your boot.
Row 1: Ch 4. Sc in the 2nd Ch from the hook, Hdc in the next st, Dc in the next st (3)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Pin the beak on as shown and sew or hot glue on. Once done, weave in ends and cut any excess yarn.

Eyes:

In Black

Only use plastic buttons for the eyes if these boots are for decoration. Since small plastic pieces can be a choking hazard, it’s recommended to embroider the eyes on instead.

Start by inserting your needle with yarn on the inside of the boot, then pull your needle out at around Round 8-9. Make a french knot for the eye. Reinsert the needle one stitch above, then pull needle out at the next eye area about 3 stitches over. Make another french knot. Insert needle one stitch above and bring the needle back inside the boot. Tie the ends of yarn into small knots to secure, then cut any excess yarn. Done!
