Breaking Bad Blanket – Free Crochet Pattern

If you watched this show, I know you were eye-ing down their crochet blanket any time it as shown. Or is that just me? Us crocheters notice crochet any time it’s on TV, right? Haha, anyways! This pattern is basically one huuuge granny square, so once you get the hang of a few rounds, you’ll be making this blanket in your sleep. Here’s the free crochet pattern to the Breaking Bad Blanket!

Information before starting

 Hook Size: 6.5mm

I used all of the following colors from Read Heart: Buff (tan), Pumpkin (orange), Coffee (brown), and Mushroom (grey)

Breaking Bad Blanket

Round 1: In orange, ch 6, slst into 1st ch. This makes a ring.

Round 2: Ch 3, DC 2 times in circle. This makes the first “cluster” with a total of 3 DC. *Ch 3, 3 DC in circle.* 3 times. Now we have a total of 4 clusters. Ch 3 and slst to top of first DC we made. This completes the square.

Round 3: Slst in next 2 st, then slst into the next cluster space. In this space, Ch 3, 2 DC, Ch 3, 3 DC. This creates an increased corner. We do this increased pattern for every corner we meet. *Ch 3, In next cluster space, 3 DC, Ch 3, 3 DC.* 3 times. Ch 2, slst to top of first DC we made. (8 clusters total)

Round 4: Slst to next cluster space, Ch 3, in same space, DC 2 times, Ch 3, DC 3. Ch 1, DC 3 times in next space, *Ch 1, in next cluster space, 3 DC, ch 3, 3 DC, Ch 1, in next space 3 DC,* 3 times. Ch 1, slst to top of first DC we made. (12 clusters total)

We repeat this pattern around for the entire blanket. For cluster corners: 3 DC, Ch 3, 3 DC. For spaces: 3 Dc. We put a Ch 1 before going to the next space every time. You should only doing an increase 4 times every row for each time you reach a corner.

Repeat this pattern for 6 more rounds in orange.

Finish off square and connect “Buff/Tan” to any cluster corner. Ch 3, 2 DC in same cluster space, Ch 3, 3 DC. Ch 1, in next space, 3 DC. Repeat usual pattern around for 9 rows in Buff/Tan.

Finish off square and connect “Mushroom/Grey” to any cluster corner. Ch 3, 2 DC in same space, Ch 3, 3 DC. Ch 1, in next space, 3 DC. Repeat usual pattern around for 4 rows in Mushroom/Grey.

Finish off square and connect “Coffee/Brown” to any cluster corner. Ch 3, 2 DC in same space, Ch 3, 3 DC. Ch 1, in next space, 3 DC. Repeat usual pattern around for 3 rows in Coffee/Brown.

Finish off square and connect “Pumpkin/Orange” to any cluster corner. Ch 3, 2 DC in same space, Ch 3, 3 DC. Ch 1, in next space, 3 DC. Repeat usual pattern around for 4 rows in Pumpkin/Orange.

Finish off square and connect “Buff/Tan” to any cluster corner. Ch 3, 2 DC in same space, Ch 3, 3 DC. Ch 1, in next space, 3 DC. Repeat usual pattern around for 6 rows in Buff/Tan.

Finish off square and connect “Mushroom/Grey” to any cluster corner. Ch 3, 2 DC in same space, Ch 3, 3 DC. Ch 1, in next space, 3 DC. Repeat usual pattern around for 2 rows in Mushroom/Grey.

Finish off square and connect “Coffee/Brown” to any cluster corner. Ch 3, 2 DC in same space, Ch 3, 3 DC. Ch 1, in next space, 3 DC. Repeat usual pattern around for 4 rows in Coffee/Brown.

Now finish off and knot/sew in all ends from changing color! To get the full Breaking Bad Blanket effect, fold the blanket from corner to corner to make a triangle and place it on your couch.

  1. How much yarn does this take. Each color

    1. Hi there! I think I used about 2-3 skeins of tan/Red Heart Buff, 1 in brown/Red Heart Coffee, 1 in grey/Red Heart Mushroom, and 2 in orange/Red Heart pumpkin. I hope that helps 🙂
